Kama Sutra

This famous text has been dated variously from 300BC to 400AD. It is well known as a sex manual detailing sex different positions, but if you were to read it I think you would be disappointed if this was all you were looking for.

There are many other ancient texts on the subject of sex, ranging from how to manuals to erotic poetry.

The Kama Sutra its self is more of a manual about choosing a wife and how to behave with her. There are a lot of details about the different types of women and courtesans and the Indian caste system is noticable. Remember that these marriages would probably be arranged and money would change hands, To ensure that your new wife was a virgin, she would probably be very young. It tells a man how to treat his new bride who is probably not very old and very scared. It emphasizes respect and patience. On the other hand it also encourages women to study sexual practices, including things like singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. The main instuction on actually having sex shows the various positions for maximum pleasure for both the man and woman. There is also a section on courtesans, which are more like mistresses than prostitutes, and some advice on hoe to make yourself more attractive, brew up love potions and aphrodisiacs and some other ideas you might find interesting. It is not an easy read, so be warned! It demonstrates that good sex as an important part of a good marriage has been recognised for a long time.

The Ananga Ranga is another Hindu sex manual. I think it is probably better if you are interested in sex more than the finer points of how to chose a wife. The Perfumed Garden is also a good read. This is an Arabic text. Islam also recognises that sex is an important part of a marriage. I am still working on these, but you will be able to download them when they are ready.
